Green Impressive in Season Debut at Nazareth
Mark Green and the Deka Batteries crew had a successful debut at Nazareth
Speedway on Sunday as they brought the #98 Deka Batteries Ford home safely
in 16th in Sunday's Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200.
The team fought problems during happy hour that continued into the beginning
of Sunday's race. "We had a lot of trouble in
happy hour. The car was really tight at the start of the race, but we kept
making adjustments on it to make it better as the race went on," said
Green. "It was really good towards the end, and we were able to race with
some of those guys. The adjustments cost us track position, so we were never
able to get up where we wanted to be. The pit stalls are pretty tight at Nazareth,
so we got pinned in our pit a couple of times as well. We finally took the
time during one of the last cautions to put in a spring rubber, and that really
made the difference we needed."
The adjustments improved the car's handling, and those changes helped Green
and the Deka Batteries crew pick up 4 positions in the last 30 laps to finish
in 16th. "The best thing about today is we were able to work in this
new chassis, and we kept it out of trouble. We learned some things today
that we can apply to the Kentucky race coming up, and keeping it in one piece
will allow us to just clean it up and make those changes to the chassis to
make it even better for next time," remarked Green. "The team worked
well together, which is impressive considering we have not been together
very long. I am really proud of how these guys kept improving on the Deka
Batteries Ford, and kept us on the lead lap all day."
